New Mexico State flag was adopted in 1925. The Daughters of the American Revolution commissioned a contest in 1920 to design a one of a kind flag for the state. And they succeeded in getting a unique and striking flag. It was one of the four flags in the country to not include the color blue in anywhere. The other 3 states are Alabama, California and Maryland. The winning flag was designed by archaeologist Dr. Harry Mera and is made of a red sun of the Zia on a yellow background. The flag was chosen to be the best in the nation by the North American Vexillological Association.
