Since the early sixteenth century, many flags have flown over Florida after the first European explorers setteled here. There flags were Spain, France, Great Britain, the United States, and the Confederate States of America. Numerous other flags also unofficially have been flown on the peninsula. But non were officially adopted.
The current state flag was approved by state voters in 1900.
The Florida State Flag displays two diagonal red bars on a white field because
Governor Francis P. Fleming suggested that a red cross be added on to white background and the flags did not appear to be a white flag of surrender when hanging still on a flagpole.
The State Seal of Florida flag features a Native American woman scattering flowers, a cabbage palmetto tree, a steamboat and a brilliant sun. Florida is the land of flowers, palm trees, rivers and lakes and sunshine, and called
“la Florida”
