Since the early sixteenth century, many flags have flown over Florida after the first European explorers setteled here. There flags were Spain, France, Great Britain, the United States, and the Confederate States of America. Numerous other flags also unofficially have been flown on the peninsula. But non were officially adopted.
The current state flag was approved by state voters in 1900.

Governor Francis P. Fleming suggested that a red cross be added on to white background and the flags did not appear to be a white flag of surrender when hanging still on a flagpole.
